Background
Council is proposing to name the public entranceway adjacent to the Berri Bowling Club at Glassey Park as Cresp Way.
Pursuant to Section 219 of the Local Government Act 1999 and Council’s Road and Street Naming Policy, Council must provide public notice when assigning or changing a public road or place.
Members of the public are invited to provide comment on the proposed naming. All written comments must be provided to Council before the close of business on Wednesday, March 18.
Why 'Cresp Way'?
Council is proposing this name change following a submission from the Cresp family.
The Cresp family has played a significant role in the Berri community since 1920, when Michael and Mary Cresp purchased a fruit block in the area after moving from Victoria. Over the past century, family members have contributed through farming, military service in World War II, small business, healthcare, sport, education and extensive community involvement.
Dan Cresp was named Berri Citizen of the Year for his service, and Jim Cresp has been deeply involved in local clubs, fundraising and leadership roles, including raising more than $90,000 for Legacy.
Six generations of the Cresp family have lived in Berri, with more than 100 years of attendance at local Catholic schools. Jim is seeking recognition of the family’s long-standing contribution by requesting a road in the Glassey Park area be named in honour of the Cresp family.
The proposed entranceway passes through the original fruit block where the Cresp family started their life in Berri.
The proposed laneway to be known as 'Cresp Way'.
At the January 2026, Council passed a resolution:
MOTION: (OMC 08/26)
That Council,
1. receive and note the report.
2. endorse public consultation to be undertaken for the proposed naming of the driveway that forms the entrance to Allan Glassey Recreation Park as Cresp Way, noting that this driveway name may be changed in the future as part of any future development.
