Background

The Department for Environment and Water has been working with Berri Barmera Council since 2019 to identify priority sites for upgrades that would improve community resilience to high flows, with Bruno Bay identified due to its popularity for boating and as a critical river access point for emergency services.

The potential upgrades will improve environmental outcomes while also enhancing community use of recreational areas and access for water managers and landholders during periods of higher flows.
On 20 August 2024, Berri Barmera Council endorsed a proposal to use grant funding from the SA Constraints Measures project to develop designs for the following potential upgrades at Bruno Bay:

  • boat ramp
  • access road and carpark
  • toilets, shelter, barbeque and seating.

These potential upgrades are part of the SA Constraints Measures Early Works project, which seeks to improve connectivity between the river and its floodplains, as well as improve community resilience to River Murray high flows of up to 80 gigalitres per day at the SA border.

The South Australia Constraints Measures project is being delivered by the Government of South Australia and funded by the Australian Government as part of the Basin Plan.
